The world is facing the largest humanitarian crisis since the United Nations was founded in 1945, with more than 20 million people in four countries facing starvation and famine.

Somalia is among the most affected of these countries, with very high vulnerability.

This is where we come in.

Approximately 6.2 million Somalis, which is more than 50% of the population, lack sufficient food. 363,000 children under the age of 5 are acutely malnourished, of which 71,000 are severely malnourished.

The drought has increased the number of outbreaks of disease, with cholera threatening the lives of many. Humanitarian efforts continue to be hampered by continued conflicts and displacements. 3.3 million people need access to emergency health care and there is a critical shortage of capacity for a health workforce.

How We Help

Strengthen Health Clinics

Medair works with trusted local partners to train and supervise health clinic staff and provide them with essential drugs and supplies. We focus our support on primary health care, vaccinations, and safe childbirth.

Nutrition

Medair runs a comprehensive malnutrition treatment programme that nourishes and saves the lives of young children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers.

Community Health

We have had great success in Somalia using “Care Groups” of trained volunteers who regularly visit the families in their community to promote good health, hygiene, and nutrition.
